Csontos (2001) classified 1676 species of the Hungarian flora into eight seed weight categories based on their thousand-seed weight. The classification was based partly on measured (1479 species) and partly on estimated seed weight data (197 species).
In PADAPT, some of the species not categorised by Csontos (2001) were categorised into the given seed weight categories based on recent publications (Török et al. 2013, Török et al. 2016) containing data from seed weight measurements carried out in Hungary and our own unpublished measurements. For species that were previously categorised based on estimated values, but for which we now have measured seed weight data, the categorisation based on the measured data was taken into account in PADAPT.
In the case of species that have already been categorised based on measured data, but are not categorised in the same seed weight category based on more recent measurements, both classifications are indicated in PADAPT.
In this way, we were able to classify 2214 species (more than 80% of the plant species included in PADAPT) into the appropriate seed weight category.
